NEW YORK, NY Tuesday May.22.2007 /netmusiccountdown.com/ --
Eurweb.com reports that some well-known names in hip-hop were secretly spied on by the NYPD before the 2004 Republican National Convention.
A 600 page file was released Wednesday May 16th by the New York Civil Liberties Union, who is now suing the city.
According to the document, Diddy, Jay-Z, LL Cool J and Alicia Keys were watched by police before the 2004 RNC. What did these artists have in common? They all had attended a rally held by Russell Simmons' Hip-Hop Summit Action Network in August 2004.
Donna Lieberman, NYCLU Executive Director said, "These documents paint a picture of a surveillance program that was broad, clumsy, and often unlawful."
"The NYPD failed to differentiate between unlawful behavior and behavior that is not only lawful but should in fact be cherished and protected. Today the public can finally bear witness to that failure."
