After its historic debut at #1 Garth Brooks' new one "More Than a Memory" is climbing back up the top ten to #7 this week, angling to return to that lofty debut slot.
SPEAKING OF GARTH...yesterday we told an anecdote about the time several years back when Garth's camp approached George Strait's camp to see if George would record a duet with him. George's people passed up the offer saying George was still working on "his thing" over there. Garth was disappointed, but told us he never felt it was a putdown at all. He understood that was a time when George Strait was just a dozen years into his career, and even though he was a superstar, he, like all established stars back then, was feeling the pressure from the new group of artists that had begun tearing up the charts and selling big numbers of albums.
Garth retired before his camp ever approached Strait again to sing with him. And, as Garth departed the scene he told us that he still intended someday to release the tribute album to Strait he's been working on for years. Meanwhile, Garth continues to honor George as he did recently at his press conference to announce the release of his Ultimate Hits package (due November 6th).
"Our thing is we play country music," said Garth, "we're proud to be country music anywhere George Strait is, proud to be. And, I think that guy, this is my opinion but I think that guy is the Haggard and Jones of our era, and I think that's how he'll be remembered by me and I think all kids comin' up."
